Matt has dedicated his practice to defending healthcare providers against medical malpractice lawsuits. He has represented a wide array of practitioners and specialties throughout Missouri, including surgeons, ophthalmologists, radiologists and anesthesiologists, among others. Matt has extensive experience in all stages of the litigation process, from pre-suit investigations up to and through trial. He has tried numerous cases to verdict, but he also understands that trial is not necessarily the best course in every case and has substantial experience in navigating alternative means to dispute resolution, including mediations and arbitrations.
Matt enjoys learning the medicine in each of his cases and is highly skilled at cutting through often voluminous medical records to identify the heart of the matter. He believes that building strong and honest relationships with his clients, and the independent experts they rely on to evaluate and defend a case, is essential to achieving the best results. He has found this approach – learning your case inside and out and insisting on honest, sometimes frank, communications with your clients and experts – has served him and his clients well.
Matt initially joined Brown & James as a junior associate in 2017. He quickly established a reputation as a strong writer and communicator, and in 2023, was elected to become a principal of the firm. Matt was born and raised in St. Louis and eventually graduated from Mizzou and SLU Law with honors. He currently lives in South City with his wife, Ashtyn, and their son, Henry. He is an avid St. Louis sports fan and enjoys attending as many Blues, Cardinals and STL City games with his friends and family as possible.
